She dreams she can fly as a large bird, a Kite. In this form she witness a robbery and follows the thieves to their hiding place. It is there she meets a leopard who can speak to her.The leopard is Snow Wind, the spirit animal of Lettice, another loner. Early development coupled with flawless looks and a good intellect have made life hard for her.Hartley Weston-Price is from a privileged background. He is popular at school and has a girl friend, Roxanne. He too has dreams, in his case of being a horse running free. The Laraby Hall robbery and contact with Kelice convinces him it is not an abnormal dream.Simon O'Rorke is in hospital and doesn't know why. While sedated, he experiences being a stoat. He learns he has been attacked by the brothers of Marcia, class beauty and bully.There was something taken from Laraby Hall which has drawn them all together and made them strong. When they find the items, a book with a Kite on the cover and a knife with a stoat handle, they believe they are talismans though they have no idea how they work. The quest to discover what they are, and the talismans while defeating the man behind the robbery, is the core of the story. It has to be done partly in their human form and partly through their spirit animals. For three of them there are also personal quests. All four of them have to come to terms with the odd ability they have.

When Patti, her mother, has breast enlargement, and makes a big thing of displaying her new assets, Jodie knows there is something going on. Jodie suspects the recent return of Tony, her father, complete with his second wife, Corrine only eight years older than Jodie, has something to do with her mother's body change.Her father is determined to get her away from her mother and doesn't appear to have spotted any of the flaws with this idea. Jodie finds out her mother has been taking art lessons at the local college. Patti is a natural artist and doing well, and it appears she might be building a real relationship with Howard, the lecturer. Life is getting complicated.
